The Practice Run, and Why It Matters Most
The single thing that prevents most exam-day disasters, takes twenty minutes, and is skipped by most students.
Preparing — Procedure
If your institution offers a practice session with the real proctoring software, do it. Almost every serious technical problem on exam day happens to somebody who did not.
Students balancing exam preparation with paid work can review the practical overview as a practical way to separate rehearsal, support calls and work sessions. The value is a voluntary log that clarifies the sequence without copying any proctoring data.
What it catches
Installation failures, which on some systems require administrator rights you may not have on a borrowed machine.
For established guidance related to camera permissions, consult Apple camera-access guidance. Local exam rules still take priority.
Antivirus conflicts, which block the software silently and are not obvious until check-in fails.
Camera and microphone permissions, which browsers and operating systems handle differently and which have to be granted before the exam, not during it.
A machine that does not meet the requirements — an old operating system, insufficient memory, an unsupported browser.
And identity verification problems, which are far better discovered in a practice session than five minutes before your exam starts.
When to do it
At least a week before, not the night before.
Because the practice run's real purpose is to leave you time to fix what it finds, and some fixes — a loan device, an operating system update, an adjustment request — take days.
If your institution only offers it in the last few days, do it anyway and raise the timing.
Do it on the actual setup
Same computer, same room, same network, same time of day if you can.
A practice run on your desktop when you will sit the exam on a laptop in a different room tests very little.
And the time of day matters more than people expect: lighting at nine in the evening is different from lighting at two in the afternoon, and face detection is affected by it.
What to check during it
Does check-in complete, and how long does it take?
Does the camera see your face clearly in your actual lighting?
Does the microphone work?
Does anything you rely on — a reading software, magnification, speech input — still work with the proctoring software running?
And does the connection hold for the full duration?
If there is no practice session
Ask for one. Most suppliers provide a demo or system check, and institutions can usually point you at it.
Failing that, run the system check the supplier offers, which is less useful than a full practice but better than nothing.
And raise it. An institution requiring proctored exams without offering practice is creating avoidable problems, and student feedback is how that changes.
What to do with what it finds
Fix it now, and record that you did. A message to support dated ten days before an exam is a different position from one sent during it.
If the fix is not possible — an unsupported device, an unfixable conflict — that is an adjustment conversation, and the adjustments section covers how to open it.
The reassurance part
A practice run also removes most of the anxiety, which is a real effect and worth having.
Knowing exactly what the screen will look like, how long check-in takes and what the proctor's messages look like turns an unknown into a procedure.
What to check
Is a practice session available, and have you booked it?
Will you do it on the exact setup you will use?
Have you left enough time to fix what it finds?
And did you write down anything that did not work?
The point
Do the practice run at least a week out, because its real purpose is leaving time to fix what it finds.
Some fixes take days.
Additionally
If no practice session exists, ask for one, run whatever system check the supplier offers, and say that it was missing.
Student feedback is how that changes.
Finally
If no practice session exists, ask for one, run whatever system check the supplier offers, and say that it was missing.
Student feedback is how that changes.
In summary
If no practice session exists, ask for one, run whatever system check the supplier offers, and say that it was missing.
Student feedback is how that changes.
A note on this
Do the practice run on the same computer, room, network and time of day.
A run on your desktop when you will sit on a laptop tests very little.
Bottom line
Do the practice run on the same computer, room, network and time of day.
A run on your desktop when you will sit on a laptop tests very little.
