Question by Aonghas Shrugged: Have any academic projects published studies comparing beliefs in religious & secular “conspiracy theories”…?
…..such as “the theory of evolution is a conspiracy by atheist scientists to undermine belief in God as Creator” versus “9/11 was an inside job” and “Apollo astronauts never landed on the moon” to see if both religious and secular conspiracy theorists share similar demographics or belief systems?
For example, as another example of a statistical correlation, is a typical “9/11 truther” of greater than average likelihood to old to various religion-related conspiracy theories?

I don’t think any formal studies have been done, but they do tend to share many key characteristics- lower education level, lower standard of living, extreme conservative views, extreme religious views.
It would be interesting to see a statistical correlation done. Maybe some grad student can pick that up as his thesis.
