Michael Jordan’s supporting cast compared to that of other GOAT candidates?

Michael Jordan

6-0 in the NBA finals

Michael Jordan played with one all-star, that was Scottie Pippen. Jordan played with one HOF level player (Pippen). The best teammates he had other than Pippen were probably Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman, BJ Armstrong, Orlando Woolridge, Charles Oakley, Toni Kukoc, and Luc Longley?

Magic Johnson

5-4 in the NBA finals

Magic won all five of his championships with Kareem, himself a GOAT candidate. In addition to GOAT candidate Kareem, Magic played with hall of famer James Worthy. In addition to that he played with numerous all-stars: Norm Nixon, Jamal Wilkes, and AC Green. He also played with Byron Scott, an all-star level player. Other teammates of Magic include Bob McAdoo (a HOFer), Vlade Divac, Sam Perkins, and Elden Campell.

Larry Bird

3-2 in the NBA finals

Bird played with all-stars Tiny Archibald, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, and Reggie Lewis. Parish, McHale, and Archibald are in the hall of fame. In addition to this Bird played with players such as finals MVP Cedric Maxwell and Bill Walton (a HOFer).

Bill Russel

11-0 in the NBA finals

Russell played with numerous all-stars: Bob Cousy, Ed Macauley, Bill Sharman, Tom Heinsohn, Sam Jones, and John Havlicek. A whopping nine of his teammates made the hall of fame!

Wilt Chamberlain

2-4 in the NBA finals

Wilt played with all-stars Paul Arzin, Tom Gola, Tom Meschery, Guy Rodgers, Nate Thurmond, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, and Elgin Baylor. Wilt played with HOFers Arzin, Gola, Thurmond, Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich.

Kareem

6-4 in the NBA finals

Basically the same as Magic except for the significant luxury of playing with Oscar Robertson.

For modern context let’s look at Kobe Byrant.

Kobe played with all-stars Shaquille O’Neal, Eddie Jones, Nick Van Exel, and Pau Gasol. In addition to HOFer Shaq he played with sure fire HOFers Karl Malone and Gary Payton.

Hall of famers

Russell: 9
Wilt: 8
Bird: 4
Magic: 3
Kobe: 3
Jordan: 1

All-star’s

Wilt: 10
Bird: 6
Russell: 6
Magic: 5
Jordan: 1
Compare his supporting casts to that of the others on this list.

Let’s look at the 1996 Bulls, MJ’s best team. Its best players were:

Scottie Pippen: the best SF in the game and arguably the best perimeter defender in the league
Dennis Rodman: the league’s best rebounder, a great defender, but utterly useless on the offensive end of the court

Toni Kukoc: a guy who a year later would average 7.9 ppg in the playoffs!
Ron Harper
Luc Longley

Compare that to the 87′ Lakers:

Kareem
Worthy
AC Green
Byron Scott
Michael Cooper (DPOY that season)
Alpha Wolf:

It is a myth that a player can "win by himself." MJ didn’t win until Pippen became solid players. However, MJ did the most with the least imo compared to the other GOAT candidates. Do you think MJ would go 5-4 in the finals if he had Kareem?
Rodman made only two all-star games in his career and both were when he was in Detroit. That said, it can be argued that Rodman was an all-star level player in Chicago but he probably wasn’t. Think about it. There are only 12 spots on an all-star team. Roughly five would go forwards. Even if you put three PF’s on the team was Rodman a top 3 PF in the East in the late 90’s?

Grant made one all-star team–the year after MJ retired in 1993-94. Grant was a very good player but ultimately he was a role player. When he played in Orlando he was at best the third best player on the team, at worst the fifth best player. Personally I would say it went Shaq, Penny, Anderson (a former franchise player), Grant, and Scott in Orlando.
a few more things before i log off alpha

1) Kukoc was overrated. He was good but not great. In 1997 he was actually the third leading scorer for the team in the playoffs–with 7.9 ppg on 36% shooting!

2) there are varying degrees of all-stars. There are MVP level all-stars, the next tier who are not MVP types but franchise players, and borderline all-stars like Rashard Lewis

3) playing with Horace Grant, a guy who was arguably only the fifth best player on the Orlando Magic a year after leaving Chicago (Shaq and Penny clearly were better, Anderson probably was, and arguably Dennis Scott was too), is not the same as having Kareem or Cousy on your squad!
MyKill: Good points. Like I said, this isn’t a perfect measure but it is an objective one and I thought it would be food for thought.

The fact is that Longley & Harper were among his best teammates–which says something! Compare that to playing with 8 or 9 HOFers.

1994 showed how great Pippen was rather then reflecting anything on Jordan

If Magic won without Kareem in 1991 would that have hurt Kareem’s legacy?

Anyways If not for the entire Cavs’ front line, including two of their top 3 players, being out for the first round, do the Bulls even get past the first round when the Cavs went 4-1 vs. them that season?

Always amuses me when people look at one scenario and not the other.

To debunk the myth that Bill Russell only won championships because of his talented teammates . . . . .

The Celtics NEVER went to the NBA Finals before Russell even with Hall Of Famers like Coach Auerbach and players like Macauley, Cousy, Sharman, and Ramsey.

Back in the ‘62 season, Russell took himself out for 4 games and the Celtics lost 4 straight games even with Red Auerbach, Cousy, Sharman, the Joneses, Ramsey and other HoF’s.

Back in ‘69, Russell took himself out for 5 games because of an injury and the Celtics lost 5 straight even with HoF’s Sam Jones, Havlicek, Satch Sanders, and Bailey Howell.
Source(s):
The instances that i mentioned are the two worst losing streaks of the Russell-era Celtics. The latter is the worst losing streak of the Celtics since Red Auerbach took over the helm.

When Russell retired after the ‘69 season, the Celtics went down from 48 wins to 34 and they MISSED the Playoffs even with HoF’s such as Havlicek, Sanders, Jo Jo White and Howell. A huge 14 game drop.

How come Pippen and the Bulls dropped only 2 games from 57 wins to 55 when the supposed "greatest" player of all time retired in ‘94. Hell, if it wasnt for that controversial phantom foul called on Scottie the Bulls wouldve been on the ECF. It wouldve been a huge blow to Jordan’s prestige and importance seeing the team that he left behind reach the conference finals. And no the post-98 Bulls doesnt count since it was a virtual restructuring of the Bulls with Jordan, Pippen, Rodman and Phil Jackson all going out.

How Come Vernon Maxwell Outperformed MJ?

I am no MJ hater he is the greatest the game has ever seen. But, Maxwell as a Rocket owned MJ look at the stats. This always puzzled me as too why cause Maxwell was just a scorer plain and simple and not a defensive threat. The players that were known to have their way and best games against Jordan were Latrell Sprewell and Joe Dumars. They were both great offensive/defensive players. But, why would Maxwell a sub par defender play so well against the GOAT?

Buddy Maxwell owned MJ just like Spree and Dumars. MJ is the GOAT, but even the greatest of all-time has a lot of trouble w/ certain players. I remember watching MJ say, Spree gave him fits.

personally I dont think Jordan was the best ever, probably top ten but im older then most people so I seen more players play. Maxwell was a very good player and a great competitor. Ive seen many people play Jordan very well.

Why do people say Jordan was overrated?

1) He is not overrated. Wilt was a great scorer…but Wilt was not a great Winner.

2)Jordan did win six rings with one of the best all around player’s (PiP).
But look at Bird or Magic’s roster’s when they were winning. They had 3-4 HOF on there roster and won less.Celtics had the greatest front line ever!

3)Yes the bulls still played well after Jordan retired …. Pip had a lot to do with that…bottom line they couldn’t get it done. They couldn’t close the deal……what separates good from great ?..closing the deal and winning the championship. If anything that proved Pippen is underrated.

______________________________________…

Bird played with a lot of HOF..from Mchale, Parish,Walton and Tiny (?hof)to Maxwell (?hof) he won 3 rings.

Bird is a great player..Jordan is a little(2 rings) better.

______________________________________…

Jordan’s has 3 ring’s on Bird..1 on Magic. You can’t compare era’s….from Clyde.Barkley,Magic,Stock/Malone to Payton/kemp he played some great teams…..anyways I don’t think it’s about the stats with Jordan. He had something special, I don’t know exactly what ,but I know it was there. He connected to more people then any athlete ever…that’s what really made him great.

______________________________________…
The fact we are even talking about him now ..means he’s the greatest……

The question is why was he the most marketed athlete? When you answer that, you will find out why he is great

He was a underdog who became a champion amongst champions! The greatest ever!………………….

______________________________________…

We are the fans who love the game of basketball. We are the ones who dream of last second shot’s to win the game….We are the ones who dream of being on "fire" in the NBA finals..We imagine soaring through the air and dunking…We are the fan’s..we are the ones who have the love for the game.

Michael Jordan will always be that kid dreaming…..something inside him made him never forget his love for the game.He will always be that fan dreaming of becoming a champion….he will always be just one of us.
This is what made him great.
______________________________________…
Pure skill and a undying love for the game, made him arguably the greatest ever…………so let’s recap..
He’s great..the most entertaining player ever(you said it).He is a champion(second to only "the great Bill russell")he is the second greatest scorer(behind Wilt) Appealed to more people and was marketed to more people then any other ATHLETE in HISTORY!

.So how in the hell is he overrated?….hope you have more then meaningless stats and a 5yrs without PiP.

______________________________________…

Of course if Jordan didn’t have great teammates he would have been a great player with no rings…similar to D.Wilkens

In order to be considered the greatest you have to be a NBA champion.Would MJ be a champion without Pip?…no.Would Magic be a champion without Kareem?..doubt it How about Bird without Parish etc… All these great players had pure skill and they were blessed to have great teammates also. With skill, love for the game and great teammates they all had a chance to become champions….and all three ,Bird,Magic and Jordan capitolized on it…….that’s what separated them from thier peers. Then Jordan separated himself from them…when you look at his whole body of work (his winning, his legacy, his stats, but MOST! importantly who he is) he is the greatest.

The people that think that Jordan was overrated are losers and they know nothing about basketball. Jordan was not overrated. Some people say the only reason why Jordan won championships is because he had Pippen and he was in the watered down 90’s. Jordan haters are hypocrites when they say Jordan didn’t win anything without Pippen. That is true but did Pippen win anything without Jordan. No he did not. Jordan needed Pippen and Pippen needed Jordan. You can’t do it all by yourself. You need a good supporting cast to win a championship.

And I hate it when people say the 90’s was watered down. I wouldn’t exactly call an era with Karl Malone, John Stockton, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, David Robinson, etc.. watered down. The real watered down era was the 70’s.

3. Michael Jordan

Jordan is one of the three greatest players of all time. In his 15-year career, he averaged 30.1 points per game, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists along with 2.3 steals and 0.8 blocks. He also shot a tremendous 49.7 percent from the field and 84 percent from the free-throw line.

He was selected to the All-Star team 13 times, winning three All-Star game MVPs. He was also one of the greatest defensive players of the all time as he won the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1987-1988.

He was selected to the All NBA Defensive team nine times, with all of them being first team selections, and to the All NBA team 10 times, with nine of them being first team selections.

He led the Bulls to two different sets of three-peats in the 1990s, winning six Finals MVP Awards. He is also second all time in MVP Awards with five, behind only Kareem, who has six.

1. Earvin Johnson, "Magic"

Magic Johnson is the greatest basketball player of all time. He is far and away the best team player ever, and he was one of the biggest winners in the history of the league.

During his career, he led the Lakers to nine Finals appearances in the toughest era of all time—the ’80s—while winning five of them. His career averages are 19.5 points, 11.2 assists, 7.2 rebounds, and two steals per game. He also shot a tremendous 52 percent from the field, and a very good 85 percent from the free-throw line.

He was selected to 12 All-Star teams, and he made the All-NBA team nine times, all first-team selections. He won three consecutive MVPs, and three total Finals MVPs. He also won two All-Star game MVPs. He ranks third all-time in total assists, and first all-time in assists per game.

Magic also had the greatest postseason performance of all-time in Game Six of the 1980 Finals against the Sixers. (HE WAS JUST A ROOKIE!!)

The Lakers were up 3-2, and Kareem was injured and couldn’t play, so Magic started at center, and also played forward and guard. Magic scored 42 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and had six assists to lead the Lakers over Doctor J and the Sixers and win the Lakers’ first championship since their legendary 1971-72 team.

DUDE, everything you say is just your opinion. LOOK at the stats and you will see that your wrong. Magic could make any team better, ANY TEAM!! Jordan wasn’t even the best on his freakn college team, FACT! he was 3rd behind WORHTY AND PERKINS!! He was a ball hog and shot more than any other player in history to that point. He is not the best and will never be the best all around player. He could not play EVERY SINGLE POSITION like Magic did. He was a freakn shooter and jumper doing the same thing that DR J did the decade before. He is one of the greatest for sure. He is not THE greatest. sorry
