Why did Alan Watts fall out of favor with Zen Buddhists?

He kind of slagged off the discipline of Zen Meditation as being unnecessary in gaining enlightenment
on wu wei or the Void.

"Understanding it is a matter of getting the point intuitively, not a result of some discipline. …it simply has to be pointed out, and then the experience…is not just verbal comprehension but actual vision."

(Tao: The Watercourse Way, 1975)

Many Zen teachers, including Shunryu Suzuki have commented that he misunderstood the Zen that they practised.
